PREPARATION AND PROPERTIES OF LANTHANUM AND CERIUM DIIODIDES
S>Reduction of LaI/sub 3/, m p 778 deg , proceeds substantially quantitatively to LaI/sub 2/, LaI/sub 2.0//sub 4 i/sub 0.0//sub 3/ w ith excess metal at 790 to 815 deg ; the diiodide melts slightly incongruently at 820 deg . Similarly, CeI/sub 3/, m p 766 deg , is reduced to CeI/sub 2/(<2.06 I/Ce obs), which at 799 plus or minus 3 deg is in equilibrium with liquid metal and a melt of composition CeI/sub 2.0//sub 9/. Both exhibit an intermediate compound identified as CeI/sub 2.4/, peritectic 731 deg . The diiodides are isomorphous and distinctly different from the other lanthanon(II) iodides in their high melting points snd in their general metallic appearance, which shades from blue- black to bronze. The metal-like character is confirmed by their high conductivities. Qualitative susceptibility measurements indicate that LaI/sub 2/ is diamagnetic. These compounds probably do not contain M/sub 2//sup +/ ions but rather the normal tripositive ions together with an equal number of electrons in essentially metallic bonding with the cations, for example, M/sup 3+/e-(I-/sup -/ )2.
