CHROMOSOME CHANGES FOLLOWING IRRADIATION IN MAMMALS

Journal Article · · Annals of the New York Academy of Sciences (U.S.)
Four mice examined three to 18 months after recovery from sublethal x irradiation were found to have stemline of abnormal cells in the marlow, spleen, thymus, and lymph nodes. Clones with demonstrable chromosome abnormalities comprised from 10 to 83% of the dividing cells in these organs, with the same stemline often recognizable in more than one tissue. Both balanced and unbalanced abnormalities were observed. In none of the animals was there evidence of leukemia. Similar changes were seen in leukocyte cultures from two patients who were treated with x rays and /sup 32/P. Chromosome abnormalities reported in radioinduced leukemia are reviewed, and the significance of such abnormalities is discussed. (H.M.G.)
