TRITON ELASTIC SCATTERING FROM LIGHT NUCLEI

Journal Article · · Nuclear Physics (Netherlands) Divided into Nucl. Phys. A and Nucl. Phys. B
Differential cross sections were measured for 6.4-, 6.8-, and 7.2-Mev tritons elastically scattered from /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O, /sup 18/O, /sup 19/F, and /sup 40/Ca, and attempts were made to analy ze these results with the optical model. Although this model gives a good account of the scattering from /sup 19/F and /sup 40/Ca, the optical parameters are ambiguous. The theory is inadequate in explaining the scattering from /sup 12/C, /sup 16/O, and /sup 18/O, and attempts to remove the discrepancies by the inclusion of spin-orbit and strong- coupling terms in the scattering formalism have proved unsuccessful. In the case of triton scattering from /sup 16/O, the distributions exhibit a large backward peak suggestive of compound resonance scattering. (auth)
