The source plasma is generated in the two stages in space. The first stage is of a hot-cathode discharge in magnetic field, and in the second stage the plasma from the first is reformed to be proper for the ion extraction. When the hydrogen plasma is produced by firing a single hole discharge in the first stage, a preliminary extraction of ion beam in steady-state has been tried. The total current of 1.17 amperes was obtained at 30 kV through the 7-apertures of 9- mm-diam. The current density reaches 260 mA/cm$sup 2$. With the four-arc discharge, the flat distribution of source plasma with the density of 10$sup 12$ to 10$sup 13$ cm$sup -3$ is attained over the area of about 6 cm in diameter. (auth)
