THE EFFECT OF STRAIN RATE, AND HEAT TREATMENT, ON THE TENSILE PROPERTIES OF EXTRUDED BERYLLIUM RODS BETWEEN 25 AND 600 C

Extruded bars of beryllium ingot and sintered powder are tensile-tested at temperatures between 25 and 600 deg C. The fracture mode is found to depend on the temperature and the strain rate, and the incidence of repeated yield phenomena is noted between 300 deg C and 500 deg C. The ductility at 600 deg C of the more impure pebble ingot material is found to be particularly affected by heat treatments, which, from their effect on the yield phenomena and on hot- hardness measurement, appear to promote precipitation of certain impurities from solution.
