Differential cross sections for the elastic scattering of oxygen target were measured over a range of laboratory angles from about 2 to 11 deg . Using a simple diffraction model and a nuclear radius of 1.34 A/sup 1/3/ x 10/sup -13/ cm = 3.37 x 10 -/sup 13/ cm, a good fit was obtained to the positions of the maxima and minima of the angular distributions. In addition, this analysis gave qualitative agreement with the absolute magnitude of the measured cross section at 9.65 Mev/amu. Attempts to fit the data with a sharp cutoff model were not as successful. By modifying this model with an imaginary nuclear phase shift to produce a diffuse cutoff, the agreement was somewhat improved. Linear and exponential shapes for the edge of the nuclear surface were equally satisfactory, and resulted in cutoff radius parameters which were larger than that obtained from the diffraction analysis, and which increased with decreasing energy. The radial diffuseness parameters DELTA R obtained from these calcualtions ranged from 0.51 x 10/sup -13/ cm at 9.65 Mev/amu to 0.23 x 10/sup -13/ cm at 5.66 Mev/ amu, in reasonable agreement with those obtained from optical model calculations.
