THE EFFECT OF X RADIATION ON LONGEVITY IN DROSOPHILA MELANOGASTER. Final Technical Report

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4020017
The length of life of control and irradiated populations of Drosophila melanogaster was investigated over a 4-yr period. Two unrelated wild type strains of flies were crossed and inbred stock from this mating was exposed to doses of x radiation ranging from 25 to 60,000 r. Both mated and unmated groups were studied and radiation exposure was given during each developmental period. The data indicate that females outlive males in both irradiated and control groups, and unmated flies live longer than mated flies. A slight increase in life span was noted in flies exposed to the lowest doses of radiation. Possible explanations are discussed. (C.H.)
