Co$sup 60$ GAMMA IRRADIATION OF SOLID SOLUTION PROPIONAMIDE-ACRYLAMIDE SYSTEM
The chemical effects induced by /sup 90/Co gamma irradiation of solid solutions of propionamide and acrylamide were investigated. The effects of energy input, composition, and temperature on the radiolytic products of the organic solids irradiated singly and in solid solutions were studied. The gases collected at --196 deg C from irradiated (22 deg C) propionamide are H (GH = 0.44), carbon monoxide (G 0.10), and smaller amounts of methane (G/sub CH/sub 4/ = 0.012). Under the same conditions acrylamide gives mostiy H, although in amounts much smaller (G/sub H/sub 2/ = 0.047). Polyacrylamide isolated from the monomer has a G value for H formation equal to 0.24. Analysis of H/sub 2/, HD, and D/sub 2/ yields from irradiation of samples containing propionamide-d/sub 7/ shows that the H is formed exclusively through a bimolecular process involving H atoms. From the runs made at different temperatures hot'' H atoms seem to participate in these reactions. Gamma-ray-initiated solidstate polymerization of acrylamide is of great significance in judging the nature of the composition of the system during radiolysis. Product yields vary with the composition of the system in a way not in keeping with the mixture rule. While the variation in the yields of H is explained as a consequence of scavenging action or energy transfer processes, the yields of methane and carbon monoxide appear to be strongly influenced by such factors as formation of unoriented amorphous polyacrylamide, recryatallization, and propagation of radicals in the solid matrix. A brief note on the EPR spectra of the irradiated samples is included. Some observations are made on the gamma irradiation of solid solutions of anthracene and acridine.
