LARGE SCALE ELECTROREFINING OF PLUTONIUM FROM PLUTONIUM-IRON ALLOYS

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4018753

Electrorefining processes have been developed for the recovery of plutonium from plutonium-- iron alloys on the 3.5 kg scale. The process can be controlled to produce plutonium metal containing <35 ppm of iron and a total of c100 ppm of detectable metallic impurities. With an alloy initially containing 2.50 wt.% iron, the recovery yield is approximates 82%. The theory of plutonium alloy electrorefining is discussed, and a method based on back emf measurements for controlling the process automatically is presented. (auth)
