NEUTRON AND GAMMA-RAY DISCRIMINATION IN ORGANIC SCINTILLATORS

Journal Article · · Mitsubishi Denki Lab. Rept.
OSTI ID:4016558

A new type of fast-neutron detector based on the principle particle discrimination by pulse shapes of scintillation decays is applied to nuclear physics experiments as a simple and high-efficiency detector. The neutron and gamma-ray discrimination for differert scintillators and photomultipliers was observed using the space charge effect in the photomultiplier. The space charge effect and the fluctuation of the space-charge -saturated pulse height were discussed. The efficiency of the neutron detector was about 10 percert at a neutron energy of 3.65 Mev, while the gamma detection efflciency was negligibly small. The minimum energy of the detectable neutron was about 0.5 Mev. As an application of the detector, the neutron total cross sections of light nuclei were measured by the transmission method. The diffurence of the optical spectra between fast and slow components in the scintillation by gamma rays was not observed. (auth)
