Phase boundaries and thermodynamic analysis of the rare-earth-rich alloys in the La--Tl and Pr--In systems

Journal Article · · J. Less-Common Met., v. 44, pp. 281-289

The phase boundaries in the rare-earth-rich portions of the lanthanum-- thallium and praseodymium--indium systems were determined using differential thermal methods. The solid solubility of Tl in bcc $gamma$-La is 11.0 at. percent at the 655$sup 0$C eutectic temperature and that in fcc $beta$-La is 1.9 at. percent at the 640$sup 0$C eutectoid temperature. The solid solubility of In in bcc $beta$-Pr is 9.8 at. percent at the 825$sup 0$C eutectic temperature while that in dhcp $alpha$-Pr is 5.6 at. percent at the 725$sup 0$C eutectoid temperature. The first La-rich compound, La$sub 3$Tl, decomposes peritectoidally at 645$sup 0$C and La$sub 2$Tl melts peritectically at 900$sup 0$C. The compound Pr$sub 3$In decomposes peritectically at 930$sup 0$C. The thermodynamic analyses data for these alloys were compared with those reported for the La--In and Pr--Tl systems. (auth)
