FUNDAMENTAL AND APPLIED RESEARCH AND DEVELOPMENT IN METALLURGY. Progress Report for July 1 through October 318 1958

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4015455
Investigations on beryllium metallurgy included activation analyses for oxygen, cladding for uranium fuel elements, random orientation in wrought beryllium and its alloys. Uranium metallurgical studies consisted of high- strength cladding for fuels, interdiffusion heat treatment, hollow fuel pins, TREAT diffusion, TREAT-thermite, and BNL Al-U foils. Aqueous corrosion studies were made for thorium alloys. Developments in zirconium metallurgy were devoted to work on high-temperature corrosion-resistant alloys, cladding and tubing textures, and ribbed tubing. Discussions are presented of investigations on: extrusion bonding, shift, and whiskers in coextruded rods and tubes; yttrium fabrication; multi-temperature extrusions; and solution techniques in x-ray fluorescent spectrometry.
