METHODS OF DECREASING THE EXTRACTION BY PROCESSING SOLVENTS OF NITROSYLRUTHENIUM NITRATO-COMPLEXES FROM NITRIC ACID SOLUTIONS. PART I. TREATMENT OF AQUEOUS SOLUTIONS WITH HYDROGEN PEROXIDE ANDOZONE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4015452
Studies have been made of the effect of hydrogen peroxide and ozone on nitrosylruthenium nitrato-complexes in nitric acid solutions. Use of ozonised oxygen (1.5 wt. % O/sub 3/) results in the formation of ruthenium tetroxide via ruthenium(IV), and at temperatures of 20 to 40 deg C an equilibrium mixture corresponding to about 10% oxidation of Ru NO(III) is produced. Treatment of heated solutions with hydrogen peroxide produces an increase in the proportion of inextractable ruthenium, probably Ru(III) nitrate, followed by formation of some Ru(IV) at acidities greater than 3M HNO/sub 3/. In support of this work, the rates of oxidation of cerous nitrate by ozonised oxygen have been studied as a function of the nitric acid and silver catalyst concentrations. (auth)
