EXPERIMENTS USING THE THERMOELECTRIC EMF OF A Pu-1 w/o Ga ALLOY
Experiments were conducted using a plutonium-1 wt.% gallium alloy ( delta Fu) as a thermocouple material in conjunction with chromel and constantan to determine whether a diffurence of sufficient magnitude in thermoelectric power existed between the plutonium alloy delta and epsilon phases to allow delta in equilibrium epsilon phase transformation kinetics to be measured thermoelectrically. It was concluded that if a difference in thermoelectric power did exist between the two phases, it was too small to permit thermoelectric phase transformation measurements. The thermoelectric power of delta plutonium was determined relative to chromel and constantan for selected temperature ranges. Experimental and handbook data were combined to give an approximation of the absolute thermoelectric power of delta plutonium at 327 deg C. (auth)
