CERAMIC FUEL ELEMENTS MADE BY HOT ISOSTATIC PRESSING
UO/sub 2/ fuel elements clad in stainless steel were prepared by the hot isostatic pressing process. UO/sub 2/ powder was consolidated in a stainless steel tube by tamping, sonic or ultrasonic vibrations, and further densified by hot isostatic pressing. Using 100%-fused UO/sub 2/ powder and temperaturcs to 1250 deg C the density of the cores was 87 to 90 f theoretical. A mechanical bond between the ceramic core and the metal cladding was obtained.
