Evidence was obtained for the existence of an intermetallic species (Li/ sub 3/Bi) in LiCl--LiF. The fused salt electrolyte, which had been maintained under a helium atmosphere, became intensely red in color. Analysis of the electrolyte revealed that both bismuth and lithium were present. Solubility and spectrophotometric measurements were undertaken to gain a better understanding of the nature of the molten salt solution. The solubilities of highpurity, activated Bi in LiCl-- LiF eutectic were measured at 600, 700, 800, and 900 deg C and were found to be 0.9 x 10/sup -3/, 1.6 x 10/sup -3/, 2.0 x 10/sup -3/, and 1.8 x 10/sup -3/ wt%, respoctively. The spectrum of the red solution at 525 deg C in the range tion band whose long wave length edge is located at 2.0 ev (16,300 cm/sup -1/). (P.C.H.)
