Canadian sediment and soil quality guidelines for mercury

Conference ·
OSTI ID:40143
The Canadian Council of Ministers of the Environment (CCME) has recently developed science-based protocols for deriving sediment quality guidelines for the protection of aquatic life and soil quality guidelines for the protection of a number of land uses (i.e. agricultural, residential/parkland, commercial, industrial). These guidelines can be used as benchmarks to assess environmental quality, as triggers for further investigation, including ecological risk assessment, and to support the development of site-specific objectives and remediation objectives. This presentation will provide details of the development of Canadian sediment and soil quality guidelines for mercury. The mercury guidelines have been developed, following methods described in the formal protocols, on the basis of information on environmental fate, behavior and toxicity of mercury to aquatic and terrestrial organisms.
