ON THE OBSERVATION OF FAST $Sigma$-HYPERONS EMITTED FROM THE INTERACTIONS OF K$sup -$-MESONS WITH EMULSION NUCLEI
A study is made of fast baryons emitted from 12,150 K/sup -/ meson interactions at rest in emulsion, in order to determine the nature and extent of K/sup -/ meson-multinucleon capture processes. Fast SIGMA hyperons are produced in at least 9% of all interactions; direct fast LAMBDA /sup o/ hyperon production is indicated by the presence of protons with energies exceeding 200 Mev. An upper limit of 30% is obtained for multinucleon processes (not producing pi mesons) from consideration of pi meson emission. The energy spectra for fast SIGMA hyperons and fast protons are given. Mass determinations on a sample of fast protons reveal about 10% deuterons and tritons. The apparent infrequency of the reaction K/sup -/ + n + n 4YY SIGMA /sup -/ + n is confirmed and an alpha -partlcle model of the K/sup -/ meson-multinucleon interaction proposed to explain both this infrequency and the emission of deuterons and tritons.
