POLARIZATION OF THE RECOIL PROTON FROM $pi$$sup 0$ PHOTOPRODUCTION IN HYDROGEN

Journal Article · · Physical Review (U.S.) Superseded in part by Phys. Rev. A, Phys. Rev. B: Solid State, Phys. Rev. C, and Phys. Rev. D
The D3/2 nature of the second resonance in neutral single plon photoproduction, gamma + p - p + pi /sup 0/, is confirmed by observations of the polarlzation of the recoil proton over a range of photon energies. The photon energy dependence of the polarization at 90 deg c.m. is in substantial disagreement with alternative models. An experimental method using nuclear emulsion as scatterer-detector, ln conjunction with a magnetic spectrometer, is shown to have both good energy resolution and reasonable counting rate. (auth)
