The formation of heavy slip bands in prestrained copper crystals was studied by transmission electron microscopy. Heavily damaged regions parallel to the primary slip plane were observed. These were found to correlate well in dimensions and distribution with slip bands observed in a previous surface investigation(l) of crystals of the same geometry. The damaged regions consisted principally of dense carpets of dislocations lying on the primary glide plane. The observations are discussed in terms of a model which explains the formation of heavy slip bands .
