Cluster integral expansions of the classical grand ensemble partition function, and singlet and pair distribution functions of fluids in external fields are discussed. Certain topological properties of terms occurring in the pair distribution function are examined and used to derive an exact integral equation for a subset of these terms. Approximations that form the activity- dependent analogs of the "chain" and "series-parallel" approximotions are obtained from this equation and discussed. The thermodynamic properties of a classical single-component electron gas in a homongeneous electric field are also calculated. (auth)
