THE DISTRIBUTION OF ION CYCLOTRON WAVES IN PLASMA (in Russian)

A gas discharge was formed in a 1.6-m long, 60-mm diameter glass tube placed in an axial magnetic field of 15 kgauss. The magnetic field reached a maximum value in 10/sup -//sup 2/ sec and dropped 2.7-fold in 8 x 10/sup -//sup 2/ sec. Hydrogen at 10/sup -//sup 4/ to 10/sup -//sup 2/ mm mercury was used. The maximum hydrogen H/sup beta ionization took place in 0.5 msec. The propagation/ of ion cyclotron waves along the magnetic field was observed; the plotted intensity and high-frequency signals show that the wave signal amplitude is a function of ionization. The results confirm previous postulations on highfrequency energy penetration of plasma in the form of cyclotron waves. (R.V.J.)
