An experiment is performed on the process mu /sup -/ + N yields N + e/ sup -/ making use of a low energy high intensity mu /sup -/ beam. If, as expected on theoretical ground, coherent neutrinoless capture of muons in copper is at least 6 times more probable than the corresponding lncoherent process, the branching ratio relative to ordinary muon capture turns out to be less than 5.9 x 10/sup -//sup 6/, with 90% confidence level.
