The Modifying Effects of Hypothermia and Anoxia on the X-ray Sensitivity of the 4-day-old Chick Embryo

Journal Article · · International Journal of Radiation Biology and Related Studies in Physics, Chemistry and Medicine
Anoxia affonds a high degree of radioprotection for the 4-day-old chick embryo. The dose-reduction factor is about 2. This protection does not depend upon a lowered metabolism, but on a truly anoxic state. The anoxia develops as a result of the consumption of the oxygen present in the egg, and not as a result of a diffusion out of the egg. The critical organ for the radiation damage appears to be the blood vessels.
