STUDY OF THE REACTION RATES BETWEEN REFRACTORY OXIDES AND GRAPHITE. Semi- Annual Progress No. 7, September 16, 1960 to March 15, 1961

Efforts during the period were devoted mostly to observations on aluminum and magnesium oxides. A value of 310,000 calories was substantiated as the activation energy for the Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/--graphite reaction. The activation energy for MgO --graphite was found to be 59,500 calories. Preliminary calculations for spinel (MgO --Al/sub 2/O/sub 3/) indicate that the activation energy is higher than for magnesia and may be between alumina and magnesia. (J.R.D.)
