Title: Performance of a moderate intensity ion source and accelerator for use in neutron radiotherapy

Conference ·
OSTI ID:4009987

A neutron generator, consisting of a duoplasmatron, a ''Pierce-type'' accelerating structure, and a windowless gas target was constructed. The device is designed to provide a relatively inexpensive intense source of fast neutrons for cancer treatment. The neutrons (15 MeV) are produced by the $sup 3$H(d,n)$sup 4$He reaction. Among the characteristics of the system discussed are ion source and gas target performance, beam emittance, and neutron production. (auth)
