Scouring by an ice keel results in large sub-scour horizontal and vertical soil deformations, and these deformations will transmit loading to any buried structure that is stiffer or more rigid than the surrounding soil. It has been determined that it is unlikely that the pipeline could be buried within the active scour zone itself, and it is the objective of this paper to describe a method of determining the necessary pipeline burial depth beneath the active scour zone, in order to accommodate the loadings imposed by ice scour. The interaction between the pipeline and the deforming soil was studied using the non-linear PIPSOL beam-column model developed and verified over the past few years. For the present study, soil displacement results from centrifuge testing have been used to generate empirical functions for horizontal and vertical soil displacements in the continuum beneath the ice keel. The derived functions with distance along the pipeline, and depth beneath the scour base are all related to the magnitude of horizontal soil displacement at the scour base. This study is limited to one characteristic ice scour dimension, and one clay soil type, in order to demonstrate the application and utility of the engineering model adopted here. The pattern of soil displacements along the pipe axis was generated for different depths below scour.
