THE ANALYSIS OF EXHAUST PRODUCTS IN THE CHLORINATION OF PLUTONIUM OXIDE WITH PHOSGENE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4009342

Conventional analytical methods were adapted to the analysis of exhaust gases from the chlorination of PuO/sub 2/ with phosgene gas. Exhaust gases from chlorination of Ce and Pu oxides were found to contain CO/sub 2/, Cl/sub 2/, CO, and unreacted phosgene. The analyses were carried out using a modified Orsat apparatus with KOH for absorbing CO/sub 2/ and COCl/sub 2/, a commercial O/sub 2/ absorbent, annmoniacal Cu/sub 2/Cl/sub 2/ solution for CO, and a NaI solution in acetone for COCl/sub 2/ absorption. Two aliquots are required since COCl/sub 2/ is absorbed with CO/sub 2/. (J.R.D.)
