SPECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF HIGH PURITY PLUTONIUM FOR METAL IMPURITIES USING ANION EXCHANGE

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4008997
The ion-exchange - spectrographic determination of impurities in plutonium was extended to cover the range 0 to 10 ppm. Fe, Ni, Cr, Ca, and Mn were determined below 1 ppm and Mg and Zn below 10 ppm. Plutonium was separated by adsorption of the nitrate complex on Dowex 1. The metal impurities were not adsorbed. The residue from evaporation of the solution was analyzed by d-c arc excitation. A coefficient of variation of plus or minus 14% at the 2 ppm level was estimated. The accuracy was within the precision of the measurements. (auth)
