THE REACTION OF BERYLLIUM AND SOME OTHER METALS WITH CARBON DIOXIDE AT ELEVATED TEMPERATURES (thesis)

Technical Report ·
OSTI ID:4008852

The chemistry and kinetics of the reaction of French Flake beryllium with CO/sub 2/ CO-- CO/sub 2/ mixtures, and CO were investigated at 500 to 750 deg C by means of a radiotracer technique and on a microbalance. It was concluded that the following reactions occur: Be + CO/sub 2/ = BeO +CO, 2Be + CO/ sub 2/ = 2BeO + C, and Be + CO = BeO + C. It is believed that the beryllium carbide present in the oxide layer is formed by the reaction: 2Be + C = Be/sub 2/ C. Kinetic results show that the oxidation is protective at temperatures up to 700 deg C; at 750 deg C, however, breakaway occurs. If the CO/sub 2/ is admitted to the preheated sample, the reaction is very rapid at first and most of the carbon is deposited over this initial period. In CO, the oxidation is non- protective above 550 deg C, while in CO--CO/sub 2/ mixtures containing up to 7.5% CO, the kinetics are the same as in CO/sub 2/ alone. The kinetics of the reaction of zirconium with CO/sub 2/ was investigated at temperatures of Zr + 2CO/ sub 2/ = ZrO/sub 2/ + 2CO is predominant at all three temperatures, and in each case the rate of reaction first decreases and then increases with time indicating breakway.
