ABSOLUTE CALIBRATION OF NEUTRON SOURCES BY THE MANGANESE SULPHATE BATH METHOD

The method of absolute calibration of neutron sources by means of the manganese sulphate bath was studied systematically with the aim of improving its sensitivity and extending its applicability to neutron sources of different spectra. The sensitivity and precision of the method were increased by using a single dipping scintillation spectrometer to count the /sup 56/Mn produced in the bath and by optimizing counting duration. A suggestion is made for improving the sensitivity further by inserting an array of detectors to count the total radioactivity present in the bath, since the effective detection range of a single detector was found to be limited to a radius of about 25 cm. The experimental procedure was modified to make it simpler and faster. Overall errors of 1.7% for sources of 10/sup 6/ n/ sec, and 2.0% for sources of 10/sup 4/ n/sec for a single dipping scintillation spectrometer are reported. Using an array of eight dipping counters, low intensity sources in the 10/sup 3/ n/sec range may be calibrated with an overall error of 2.2% as compared with 9% obtained with a single counter. The major component of the overall errors, is the 1.5% error introduced by the 4 pi BETA standardizations. (auth)
