Experimental study of air bubble collapse phenomena with three-dimensional particle image velocimetry
- Texas A and M Univ., College Station, TX (United States). Dept. of Nuclear Engineering
Bubble collapse phenomena may cause severe water hammer in a nuclear power plant and may induce erosion of hydraulic equipment such as a ship propeller or pump impeller. It is important to study bubble collapse phenomena because detailed quantitative information can help improve the understanding of heat transfer processes. The study of steam bubble collapse is especially important because heat transfer in a system with a phase change is more efficient than one without a phase change. Detailed information about bubble collapse behavior requires a three-dimensional data acquisition technique. In this initial study of bubble collapsing behavior, air bubble collapse phenomena was investigated using a new three-dimensional Particle Image Velocimetry technique. Quantitative data was acquired and a system for future studies was developed.
