THE RADIOLYSIS OF n-PROPYL BROMIDE
The radiolysis of degassed liquid n-propyl bromide by Co/sup 60/ gamma rays produces no elemental bromine, but yields HBr with initial G-values of 0.06, 0.12, 2.9, and 10.5 at -78, 0, 25, and 50 deg , respectively. At 25 and 50 deg G(HBr) decreases to zero with increased time of irradiation, the steady-state concentration at 50 deg being three times as great as at 25 deg . A brownish nonvolatile telomer is formed with an estimated G, for C/sub 3/H/sub 6/ groups incorporated, of 0.09, 0.6, and 4.3 at 0, 25, and 50 deg , respectively. Added Br/sub 2/ increases G(HBr), decreases G(C/sub 3/H/sub 8/), and eliminates telomer formation. Added C/sub 3/H/sub 6/ increases telomer production. In the presence of 1 mole% or greater of added HBr or with an 02 concentration of 0.06 mole% or higher, elemental bromine is produced. These and related data on hydrogen, hydrocarbon, and organic bromide production reveal the existence of a number of competing elementary reactions some of which are temperature dependent. (auth)
