The ratios /sup 39/Ar//sup 36/Cl in five dated fall meteorites were determined and compared with a production cross section ratio obtained from production measurements with iron targets. The results indicate that the average intensity of cosmic rays during the last million years was the same, within 10% of the average value during the last thousand years. Determination of the /sup 37/Ar//sup 39/Ar activity ratio in recently fallen meteorites and comparison with production cross sections measured with high-energy protons and alpha particles indicated that there is a 10 to 20% gradient in cosmic-ray intensity in space between the earth and a point some hundreds of kilometers further from the sun. Also, intense solar flares seem to produce measurable effects on meteorites. (D.C.W.)
