It has often been assumed that the radiation damage in the hydration layer of DNA is rapidly transferred to the DNA in the form of electrons and holes. However, the proton transfer reaction is known to take place on the time scale of a molecular vibration and may be competitive with the hole transfer reaction. In order to determine the importance of the hole transfer reaction, the authors have undertaken a search for {center_dot}OH in the DNA hydration layer by attempting direct ESR detection of {center_dot}OH at low temperature and also by H{sub 2}O{sub 2} product analysis.
