An attempt was made to determine the limitations on plasma bunch velocity, density, and temperature parameters and to estimate the ratio between the directional motion and quantity of accelerated material. Theoretical studies predicted the presence of Hayleigh-Taylor instabilities in bunches produced in coaxial and conical fields, showing that the plasma production method itself produces instabilities that limit plasma parameters. Experiments were carried out on hydromagnetic instabilities in conical accelerators. The results showed that instabilities appearing in plasma bunches with optimum parameters complicate not only transport but also injection into traps. (R.V.J.)
