EFFECT OF REFLECTION ON THE PERFORMANCE OF MECHANICAL NEUTRON MONOCHROMATORS

The effect of total reflection on the calculated transmission function of mechanical monochromators is discussed, The critical angle for total reflection of neutrons with wavelength lambda from a smooth surface is given by THETA /sub c/ = lambda (N/sub a// pi )/sup 1/>s, where N is the density of the nuclei and a is be coherent scattering amplitude averaged over the nuclei forming the surface. The monochronnator should be made of a material with a snnall coherent and large incoherent and/or absorption cross section. (L.N.N.)
