It was demonstrated by Kapitza in 1941 that the flow of heat Q from a solid body to liquid helium produces a temperature discontinuity $delta$T at the interface. Early attempts to explain the thermal resistance $delta$T/Q in terms of phonon transmission met with little success, the theoretical values of $delta$T/Q were much too large. Of the numerous mechanisms suggested to augment the transfer of thermal energy across the interface, only a few have the support of experimental evidence. Mechanisms which apparently have been observed are the coupling to phonons, to individual quasi-particles, and to nuclear magnetic fluctuations in liquid $sup 3$He. When the solid is metallic, the influence of the electron-phonon interaction has also been demonstrated. Nevertheless a full theoretical explanation of the thermal resistance $delta$T/Q still eludes us, especially in the temperature range near 1$sup 0$K. Recent experiments indicate the diverse phenomena which theory must eventually incorporate. 4 figures. (auth)
