Absolute cross sections for single and multiple electron-impact ionization of He, Ne, and Ar

The absolute cross sections for the production of ions in various states have been measured for impact ionization of He, Ne, and Ar by 4.1-keV electrons. The total ionization cross section for neon is found as a function of the energy over the electron energy range 4--14 keV. Factors tending to distort accurate measurement of the cross sections for multiple ionization are analyzed. The results disagree with those reported by van der Wiel et al. but agree with data reported by Schram. (AIP)
