ON THE STRUCTURE OF POLYETHYLENE GRAFTS WITH PREIRRADIATION TECHNIQUE (in French)

Journal Article · · J. Polymer Sci.
The structure and morphology of copolymers obtained by grafting styrene, vinyl acetate, acrylonitrile, snd methyl methacrylate monomers onto polyethylene preirradiated with gamma rays were investigated by x-ray analysis and electron microscopy. Analysis of the x-ray diagrams at large - angles permits the changes in crystallinity of the polymers subjected to grafting as well as deformation of the crystal lattice to be followed as function of the nature, frequency, and length of the molecules grsfted onto the polyethylene backbone. The grsfting reaction is heterogeneous, leading to the coexistence of three phases, namely, nongrafted polyethylene, grafted copolymer, and homopolymer. Electron microscopy demonstrated the form and distribution of the precipitated homopolymer as functions of grafting conditions (preliminary radiation, temperature, etc.) and preliminary thermal treatment (annealing, quenching, etc.) of the graft copolymer.
