THE MANUFACTURE OF EGCR CORE 1 FUEL ASSEMBLIES

Journal Article · · Welding J. (N.Y.)
OSTI ID:4000366
The entire initial core loading for the EGCR, 1650 fuel assemblies, was successfully produced by: copper brazing a mid-cluster or midplane spacer to empty fuel tubes under a hydrogen atmosphere; welding end caps to empty fuel tubes prior to loading them with UO/sub 2/ pellets; assembling individual fuel elements by sealing off each fuel tube after loading it with UO/sub 2/; and using welding and appropriate fixturing to produce individual fuel assemblies each consisting of seven precisely spaced fuel elements.
