Magnetic-susceptibility, heat-capacity, and neutron-scattering measurements have been performed on the {ital S}=1/2 quasi-one-dimensional system La{sub 6}Ca{sub 8}Cu{sub 24}O{sub 41}, which has both simple chains and two-leg ladders of Cu{sup 2+} ions. The singlet state with dimerization observed in the chains of Sr{sub 14}Cu{sub 24}O{sub 41} becomes magnetic in La{sub 6}Ca{sub 8}Cu{sub 24}O{sub 41} and a magnetic ordering has been observed below 12.20{plus_minus}0.05 K. The magnetic structure in the ordered phase is such that spins in the chains are parallel and these ferromagnetic chains have a modulated structure. {copyright} {ital 1996 The American Physical Society.}
