This first article of a two-part series will present several recently introduced advances for improving performance of beam operated sucker rod pumping and progressive cavity pumping (PCP). Developments include several new devices for down-hole valves, cages, gas separation and gas-lock prevention, pump-off control, sand filtering, system efficiency analysis and polished rod protection/safety. PCP advances include higher volume systems, insertable pumps, rod-less pumps, new material design and analytical methods. Other R and D development discussions present material surface research, a new diverting wellhead, control/monitoring, desanding and a retrievable coiled tubing safety valve.
