A new phase in hydrogen-charged Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb
- Carnegie Mellon Univ., Pittsburgh, PA (United States). Dept. of Materials Science and Engineering
In recent years {gamma}-TiAl has emerged as a promising structural intermetallic system, primarily because of its low density, high strength and stiffness and its demonstrated ability to tolerate component manufacturing processes and the dynamic loads encountered during turbine engine operation. Because of the possibility of future hydrogen-fueled aircraft, the response of these materials in environments containing hydrogen is of interest. Although there have been a number of studies focusing on the behavior of hydrogen-charged {gamma} or {gamma}-{alpha}{sub 2} TiAl-base alloys, no consistent observations have emerged regarding hydride formation in these systems. In this present communication the authors report on a new phase observed in Ti-48Al-2Cr-2Nb following high pressure hydrogen charging at 800 C, and highlight the similarities between the observed phase and hydrides reported for other TiAl alloys subjected to high pressure gas phase hydrogen charging at elevated temperatures.
