The formation of a rubble field and its effects on the ice forces on a structure is poorly understood. Observations and measurements of model tests on a faceted conical structure have been made to gain insight into this problem. Four different types of rubble formation processes are identified. The effects of the rubble field on the ice force are shown to be a function of ice piece size, the ice strength and ice thickness. Based on these tests, the rubble can increase the ice load by a factor of two to three. The largest relative increase in load due to rubble occurs for thinner, weaker ice conditions.
