The primary focus of this paper is to investigate the fatigue damage accumulation of marine risers subjected to non-Gaussian random wave loadings. A finite element model is used to discretize the riser into a multi-degree-of-freedom structural system. Time domain simulations have been conducted to generate random wave loading and riser stress response time histories. Fatigue damage is calculated using both the Rayleigh approximation and the rainflow method. The non-Gaussian effect is shown to become increasingly significant with the increase of wave height. It is found that actual fatigue life could be less than half of that predicted neglecting the non-Gaussian effect.
