Risk analysis revealed that loss of containment from offshore pipeline was caused by dents due to anchoring and impacts, corrosion and weld defects. To make rational decisions on operating pressure, it is necessary to accurately estimate burst strength of dented and corroded pipe. Based on extensive literature review of previous research, a research work is undertaken to modify the ANSI/ASME B31G criterion for corroded pipe and a criterion for pipe containing combined dent and notch, since the existing criteria suffer from large scatter in the burst strength prediction. As an example, a total safety factor is calibrated using structural reliability methods. It is shown that model uncertainty of the criterion is the dominantly important factor in the failure probability calculation. Further development of methods for probabilistic assessment is proposed to provide operators with technical support regarding decision of operating pressure, re-qualification and corrosion allowance design.
