This paper presents techniques used to determine in situ stress orientation and magnitude in the Marlin and Albacora offshore fields located in the Campos Basin. These data were collected from anelastic strain recovery (ASR) tests, a low-frequency dipole tool, and a downhole extensometer that provides a new means of analyzing in-situ stress directions and rock properties. The paper also describes general prejob planning for drilling ship operators performing a microfracturing stress test in deep-water wells. Discussion includes equipment configuration and layout, string configuration, and fluid used to create and propagate the required hydraulic fractures. The possible causes of success or failure for each running session are also discussed.
