Double-line CO{sub 2} laser, of 10.59-{mu}m and 9.57-{mu}m lines or 10.3-{mu}m, illuminated a hydrogen gas. The beat of two lines of a forward Raman scattering can excite a relativistic plasma wave, accelerating hot electrons in the plasma to high energy of above 20 MeV. On the other hand, a backward Raman scattering occurs in a single line laser illuminated plasma, exciting a slow plasma wave and accelerating plasma electrons to a few hundred keV. A second harmonic YAG laser is used for Thomson scattering measurements of these plasma waves. {copyright} {ital 1996 American Institute of Physics.}
