The ORNL ion-atom merged-beams apparatus is being used to measure absolute total electron capture by multicharged ions from atomic hydrogen from keV/u to 20 meV/u collision energy. Measurements with Si{sup 4+} + D which are compared to fully quantal molecular-orbital coupled-channel calculations for H and D, exhibit a l/v increase at low energies and a surprisingly strong isotope effect. Both are attributed to trajectory effects of the ion-induced dipole attraction. Measurements with N{sup 2+} show strong differences with earlier hydrogen furnace measurments below 1 keV/u but agree with calculations at low energies which provide improved rate coefficients relevant to the study of photoionized nebulae. Measurements with C{sup 4+} are in progress.
